A national food wholesaler supplements their ERP system

Over the years Castell Howell has become established as one of the country’s leading independent food wholesalers. It all started with farming cows and chickens on the farm in Castell Howell, Trevaughan in West Wales in 1998 supplying other local businesses. After over 20 years of consistently high growth they now employ nearly 600 staff, have a turnover of £127M and have built or acquired a range of related subsidiaries and partner manufacturing organisations.

This growth continues through to today and in 2017 warehouse space was doubled with the completion of a new 50,000 square foot depot extension. When looking for software, Castell Howell not only needed something to help them follow industry standard compliance and best practices, but also to find a system which could support their future growth plans. They wanted a system which could expand to cover new areas of business, not one which would be outgrown and quickly become obsolete.

The hybrid model consists of two parts:

  1. agileChilli’s standard agile:SA software for Supplier Approval. For Castell Howell, there was a radical reduction in paperwork and time involved managing the compliance of hundreds of suppliers. Having the system chase suppliers and automatically collect relevant certificates and documents from each saved hours each day.

 

2. Access to the agileBase platform to extend this technology into other areas – it now covers dozens of departments – everything from transport through to HR, production and customer service.

 

How it works

As the two systems are based on the same technology, data flows between them easily. The agileBase platform allows software to be rapidly prototyped and adopted as needs emerge, which happens often in a growing organisation.

For example, to keep on track on a growing delivery fleet, the transport department want to be notified whenever a license is due for renewal (there are various different types of licenses required for drivers and vehicles). A new app was quickly created on the Transport homepage alongside vehicle records and maintenance schedules.
